Understanding the Causes of Burning Mouth Syndrome

understanding-the-causes-of-burning-mouth-syndrome
Burning Mouth Syndrome causes a persistent burning feeling in the mouth, often linked to stress, hormonal changes, or nutritional deficiencies.

What Causes Burning Mouth Syndrome?

Have you ever experienced a sudden burning sensation in your tongue, lips, or mouth? This condition, known as Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS), can be confusing because it often has no single identifiable cause. In many cases, it is not directly linked to a specific dental problem dental clinic in Trichy.

Various factors can trigger BMS. For example, women going through menopause may experience this burning sensation due to hormonal changes. Similarly, individuals dealing with high stress or anxiety may also develop symptoms. In some cases, nerve damage may be a contributing factor. Since there is no one definitive cause, dentists usually diagnose and treat BMS based on individual symptoms.

Common Symptoms of Burning Mouth Syndrome

People with BMS often describe a persistent burning feeling affecting the tongue, gums, lips, throat, or the entire mouth. It may feel as if the mouth has been scalded by something hot. Other common symptoms include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Bitter or metallic taste
  • Soreness or irritation
  • Numbness of the tongue
  • Burning pain that worsens during the day or occurs intermittently

Primary Causes of Burning Mouth Syndrome

BMS can result from multiple underlying factors, and in some cases, more than one cause may be involved.

1. Oral Thrush
A fungal infection in the mouth can lead to burning sensations in the tongue, lips, and inner cheeks. Conditions like diabetes or prolonged denture use may increase the risk.

2. Stress and Anxiety
Psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, and depression can contribute to BMS. Interestingly, the condition itself may also increase emotional stress.

3. Nutritional Deficiencies
A lack of essential nutrients, especially B vitamins, iron, and zinc, can affect oral tissue health and lead to symptoms like burning sensations and even anaemia.

4. Denture Use
Poorly fitted or low-quality dentures can irritate oral tissues and increase pressure on mouth muscles, causing discomfort and burning sensations.
